Catholic Standard Article

Our local archdiocesan newspaper, the Catholic Standard, recently did a feature article on Mother Catherine Spalding School. In it, they made mention of the technology scholarship fund established by John's family and friends in his memory. You can read the entire article by clicking on each individual picture.

Renewal (Con't)

Per the earlier post, the blossoms continue to progress.

Another Road Trip

The weekend of March 7th, Alex headed to San Francisco to embark on the next phase of her life plan. Of the many passions John and Alex shared, one was a sense of adventure. In that vein, Alex was determined to drive cross country to her new home and job and visit New Orleans along the way. To do so, she enlisted John's sister Jes in the cause and together with Alex's cat Zeus, they set off on an over 3,300 mile journey westward. Their itinerary is depicted on the map above (click on the map to see their route in detail). Check back for pictures of their trip, with JW looking over them all along the way.

Renewal

Another year -- spring is here -- and perpetual life manifests itself all around us. Recall that central to John's memorial is a bench shaded by three cherry trees that are identical to those surrounding the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC. One of John’s last days was spent lying with Alex under the cherry trees at the Tidal Basin while they were in full bloom. His memorial was intended, in part, to forever bloom on the upcoming anniversary and as you can tell by these pictures, that anniversary is approaching. Check back often to see how this living memorial continues to manifest itself and remind us of the beauty of John's life, both earthly and heavenly.

Today is Easter

Today is Easter and a time to especially remember JW. Last Easter, God welcomed John home. Now he watches over all of us, protecting and nourishing all those he loved during his short life.

John's love for his Mom and Dad, Jess, Mike, Alex, Gina and all his friends and family is eternal. Our love for him is also eternal...extending beyond the world as we can understand it. JW is with us every day, in our hearts and in our spirit.

JW, Happy Easter!

love, Aunt Susan & Uncle John

John's Pel Tech

This past Wednesday, a check was presented to the principal at Mother Catherine Spalding School conveying the proceeds of John's memorial scholarship to date. Again, many thanks to all who contributed. A tax deductible fund will be established at the school shortly which can receive additional contributions in John's memory. Details will be provided soon. In the meantime, for those who want to know more about how this fund will be used, you can go to this earlier post.

Papa's Big 85th Birthday Celebration

This past weekend, the Leonard clan got together to celebrate John's granddad's (Papa) 85th birthday. A memorable time was had by all -- and memories of John and his grandmother (Mammy) added to the specialness of the evening. Papa offered reflections on memories involving all, to include his grandchildren. Of course, it was John who first made Papa and Mammy grandparents, being the first of six grandchildren. One of Papa's memories of JW entailed JW's Uncle John, who many years ago was a builder of homes. In that vein, on a trip to Monticello with his Mom, Dad, Mammy and Papa, JW asked if his Uncle John had built Thomas Jefferson's famous architectural achievement high on a hill in overlooking Charlottesville, Virginia. We don't know if his Uncle John used the comment in his advertising after that, but apparently that is one of the reason why JW became a computer engineer and not a liberal arts major like his Mom and Dad.

A Big Thank You

We have become aware lately of individuals who have made contributions to John's Scholarship Fund who have not received an acknowledgment from us. We have talked to Bank of America and they have acknowledged that they have had a problem in consistently informing us of contributions to the fund so that we can provide an appropriate acknowledgment. Nonetheless, we are distressed at the thought that individuals have made thoughtful contributions (to include one truly significant contribution) and yet have not received our personal heartfelt thanks.

If you have made such a contribution and did not intend to remain anonymous yet did not receive our personal thanks, please accept this imperfect substitution. Also, please do not hesitate to mention to us if you believe your contribution (either in John's or his Grandma's memory) falls into this category. In the meantime, we anticipate establishing a formal, tax exempt fund directly at Mother Catherine Spalding School in John's memory in the near future. Thank you for your understanding and your continued generosity.

The current balance of the scholarship fund is a whopping $50,434.77.

The Rock (Part Two)

Recall the earlier posting about the rock from Alcatraz which Alex made certain to bring back to John. There is now a companion rock on the other side of John's headstone, a rock from the Inca Trail in Peru. This rock, however, will someday be returned to its original resting place by John's family. In the meantime, it is a fitting reminder of John's adventurous spirit and love of life.

Name the Fund

At this post from the other day, we gave an update as to the status of John's scholarship fund. One of the things to accomplish during the next several weeks is to come up with a permanent name for the fund.

By way of background, the nickname for Mother Catherine Spalding School is the Pelicans. As such, one of the names we were contemplating for the fund is "John's Pelican Technology Fund" aka "John's Pel Tech." This captures the essence of John's love of technology and harkens back to his alma mata, VA Tech, to which he remained connected to the end.

Let us know what you think by posting a comment to this entry, to include any alternative suggestions you may have.

The Gift of Stories & Photos

Today, John's earliest best friend, Joe, along with his wife, dropped by for a visit. They brought with them photos of John we had not seen before, and even better, stories of John we had not heard. It was a wonderful gift to be shared, and we are so grateful. Some of the pictures are here.

Return to Machu Picchu

One of the most exhilarating things John did in his life was to hike up the Andes to Machu Picchu, a pre-Columbian Inca site located at 7,970 ft above sea level on a mountain ridge in Peru. Often referred to as "The Lost City of the Incas", Machu Picchu was built around the year 1450 and abandoned a hundred years later, at the time of the Spanish conquest. By clicking on the email to the left, you can read in his own words how this adventure impacted John.

Several month ago, Chris, who was an intern in John's Dad's office this summer, spent some time in South America. While there, he too hiked to Machu Picchu and, as you can see, brought with him John's picture. This is yet one more way how not only John's picture, but his overall life continues to be compelling.

John's Scholarship Fund Update

One of the purposes of this blog is to keep John's family and friends up to date with respect to the status of the scholarship fund established in his memory. This fund has become a truly fitting tribute to John. To date, almost $51,000.00 has been contributed and donations still periodically arrive, especially during the season of holiday giving. We anticipate considerably more will be available once the affairs of John's estate are settled.

To remind everyone, the original objective of the fund was to, as John's brother says, help the "big geek" foster a lot of "little geeks" who share John's love of information technology. To that end, we have identified an exciting opportunity to continue John's legacy. It involves the elementary school that John attended from the 2nd through 7th grade, Mother Catherine Spalding School in Helen, MD. John started there when we first moved to Maryland in 1983 and went there until we moved to Belgium in 1989 and as such, it had a big impact upon John's formative years. In addition, John is buried in the cemetery directly behind the school, which provides yet another connection.

We have had preliminary discussions with school and archdiocesan officials and have focused at this point in time on potentially equipping the middle school grades of Mother Catherine with enough laptop computers that each student will have one to use in class. The objective would be to have the use of the internet and various software applications directly incorporated into lesson plans across the board. This would allow students and teachers to directly incorporate the use of information technology into all course work rather than being limited to a computer lab that can be accessed only periodically during the week.

We want to make certain that this makes the most sense for the students and faculty before any hard commitments are made at this point in time. Nonetheless, we also want to make certain that all of John's family and friends are aware of the latest developments in this area.

For those interested, contributions can still be made to:

Mechanicsville, MD 20659

UPDATE: A tax-deductible charitable scholarship fund in John's memory has been established at Mother Catherine Spalding School. For those interested, tax-deductible contributions can be made to:

and can be mailed to:

Memories of a "Mini Road Trip"

In addition to the memories of road trips past included in the below post, Mom wanted to be certain that we captured for the blog our fond memories of an excursion that, while not a road trip, constituted the last time all five of us were together.

It was February 24, 2007. Dad had to work that Saturday so Mom and Jes came into town that morning as well. While Dad worked, Mom and Jes latched-up with JW and Mike. After Starbucks, while Dad was at a meeting, the gang went to the International Spy Museum which, even though John and Mike were two intel weenies, neither had been to before. It was the second time for Mom.

Later that afternoon, after Dad got out of the meeting, we all met outside the National Archives and, like so many other Leonard excursions, we winged it. One of the objectives for that night was to go to the Belgian restaurant on 11th Street by the Marine Barracks. Somehow, it did not seem to work out with reservations, so instead we went to the Native American Museum on the Mall -- not the best choice in retrospect. After that we wanted to go see the German thriller/drama The Lives of Others (Best Foreign Language Film, 2006) at the E Street Cinema, but the show we wanted to see was sold out. So we punted again and went to Ella's for an early dinner of pizza cooked in a wood fired oven.

The food, the drinks, and especially the conversation were great -- it having been Lord knows when since just the five of us had the opportunity to just sit around and enjoy each other's company. We then had some more time to kill while waiting for the next show time so we all went to the ESPN Zone downtown where everyone shot some hoops. It seems Jes was able to get the best of just about everybody that night.

We then went to the late show of the movie which brought back found memories of earlier road trips to East Berlin since the movie took place in that divided city about the same time we lived in Europe. Little did we know that we would loose John just 6 weeks later but we are so thankful that we all took advantage of the time we had. We are also thankful for Alex and Gina sharing John and Mike with us that evening so that it could just be Mom, Dad and the kids one more time!

Family Road Trip

Thanksgiving around the family dining room table, of course, was not an option this year. The challenge was to try to replace some of the pain with something positive. First objective -- avoid the reminders of THE FAVORITE FAMILY HOLIDAY by going somewhere where Thanksgiving is not even celebrated. Mom was hoping for someplace warm like the Bahamas. Dad suggested a more practical (yet considerably colder) Canada. Closest border crossing to Maryland is Niagara Falls -- thus the gift of one last Leonard Family Road Trip consisting of just Mom, Dad and the kids.

Family road trips constitute some of the fondest memories for most families. The Leonards are no exception. As best as we can recall, the last road trip that entailed Mom, Dad and all the kids was over 10 years ago when we all went to Aunt Sue's and Uncle John's place in Nantucket. During the trip, J.W. celebrated his 21st birthday and thus enjoyed his first "legal" beer while in town. One of John's best friends, Joe, joined us on the trip and provided many memories as well, to include standing in the surf all night long fruitlessly, yet determinedly, fishing if only for hauling all that fishing gear so far. On the way home, J.W., Joe and Mike achieved some sort of "distinction" by reciting almost the entire script of the movie Dumb and Dumber while traveling down I-95 between Providence, RI and the NY-CT state line.

Many memorable road trips, of course, took place in Europe, such as when Mom, Dad, the kids as well as Mammy & Papa traveled from Belgium to Ireland. While there, J.W. celebrated his 14th birthday. We all stayed in a real thatched cottage, behind which was a cow pasture surrounded by an electric fence. Somehow, John and Mike thought it was a good idea to challenge each other to keep touching the electric fence. Both said that after a while, it didn't hurt as much (of course, the dumb cows never resorted to such actions). Another memory was finding ourselves staring down a 50 cal. machine gun while going trough a border checkpoint going into Northern Ireland for a pizza dinner.

Other trips included Paris (where Dad and the kids had to walk up the Eiffel Tower since we could only afford elevator tickets for Mom & Grandma); Italy where John and Mike brought "switchblades" at Mt. Etna and JW lost in Rome a model Lamborghini car that Grandma had bought him; Heidelberg where Mom & Dad trusted JW to take his brother and sister out to dinner at a restaurant (where they had pizza encrusted with salt) while Mom & Dad went to an event for Dad's graduation from Boston University; and Berlin where all the kids were content to stay in the hotel room watching the video of the Karate Kid notwithstanding being in one of the most historic cities of the 20th century.

Of course, there is the very first road trip where Mom, Dad and JW went to the Pennsylvania Dutch country when he was only one-years old and JW got his train engineer's cap that he kept for so many years; followed by the trip to Myrtle Beach where Mom, Dad & JW joined John's godparents, Sue and Steve and their nephew, Anthony, in a pop-up tent on the beach. Both JW and Anthony cried incessantly until they were blessed by the priest at Mass that weekend. They were both little angels after that.

It was in this vein, that Mom, Dad, Mike & Jessica, joined by memories of John, embarked on one last great Leonard Road Trip. Of course, there will be other road trips to come, joined by new our new daughter-in-law, Gina and a future son in-law as well as grandchildren yet to come, but never again will the "five" of us experience such an opportunity to be together by ourselves. Since we thought the last of such trips was ten years ago, we are, or course, appreciative of this opportunity. The only way it could have been better is if we did not have to settle for just memories of John, no matter how sweet they may be.

We stayed at an interesting Bed & Breakfast in Niagara Falls, ON. You can see for yourself additional details of the last great Leonard family road trip by clicking on the below picture:

Where in the World Continued

Recall the original challenge and the subsequent first out of the gate by Mike and Gina. Well, it seems the VT Gnome continued his world travels with a trip to Niagara Falls, Canada from November 21-24, 2007. See the photos below as well as the following post for more details.

Warmth and Comfort Fulfilled

Recall the earlier blog entry regarding Mom & Dad's birthday gift to Alex -- a quilt made, in part, from swatches of John's clothes. The local Amish woman has finished the process by adding batting material and a backing. Together with memories of John, we hope that this quilt gives Alex warmth and comfort. To see what the finished quilt looks like, click on the photo to the right.

Where in the World, Indeed

You all may recall that a couple of months ago, John's AT issued somewhat of a challenge at this post as to where in the world the VT gnome would show up next. Well, as indicated by the below pictures, Mike and Gina were first up in continuing John's peripatetic spirit.

John's Toast to Mike & Gina

Mike popped the big question to Gina Saturday night and she said yes! Mike then surprised Gina with a big celebration in Old Town Alexandria with plenty of family and friends in attendance. Dad had the opportunity to give the toast that John would have given; telling his bro that he did good and that he was glad that Mike finally listened to his (John's) advice. Similarly, Dad passed on to Gina John's joy at having another sister to love, especially since he already has such great love for his little sister, Jes. From Mom & Dad's perspective, we are so heartened to see that John and Mike are each blessed with having a fantastic woman to love and to be loved by. It gives us great joy to see our children experience the same depth of love that we have been able to share for over 35 years. Mike and Gina will soon return from Europe with pictures showing all the places visited by the VT gnome.
